Wilma Erasmus is a clinician in private practice and the owner of Erasmus Physiotherapists Inc. She has a keen interest in the management of critical ill patients and has done her Master Degree at the University of Witwatersrand in this field.

She is a former President of the South African Society of Physiotherapy and the past President of the International Private Physical Therapy Association (IPPTA), the official subgroup from private practice of WCPT. 

She lectures on various subjects ranging from practice management, cardio-pulmonary management and ethics. She is passionate about the physiotherapy profession and dedicated to ethical, principle leadership and sharing of knowledge.

Knowledge of physiology provides a periscope for identifying abnormalities beneath the skin responsible for clinical manifestations on the surface (Tobin MJ). It advances our understanding of the chemical structures and processes that underpin human health and disease, revealing the underlying transformations between these two physiological states of health and disease. In the present advances made in the management of critically ill patients or patients who are suffering from chronic illness, it is important to account for human physiology when treating and rehabilitating these patients.

In this 3-hour lecture we will take an indepth look at the following:
o The metabolic response to prolonged illness/critical illness;
o Revision of basic hematology and chemistry;
o Basic blood gas analysis;
o The effect that any changes of the above can have on the patient’s rehabilitation program and progress.
