 er title='More Info']\nWhy Dry Needling?\nDry Needling (DN) is a skilled i
ntervention that uses a thin filiform needle to penetrate the skin and sti
mulate underlying myofascial trigger points\, muscular\, and connective ti
ssues for the management of neuromusculoskeletal pain and movement impairm
ents.\nDN is used to treat dysfunctions in skeletal muscle\, fascia and co
nnective tissue and diminish persistent peripheral nociceptive input and r
educe or restore impairments of function leading to improved activity and
participation. The physiological basis for DN depends upon the targeted ti
ssue and treatment objectives. The treatment of myofascial trigger points
( TrPs) has a different physiological basis than treatment of excessive mu
scle tension\, scar tissue\, fascia\, and connective tissues. TrPs are hyp
erirritable spots within a taut band of contractured skeletal muscle fibre
s that produce local and/or referred pain when stimulated.\n\nTrPs are div
ided into active and latent TrPs dependent upon the degree of irritability
. Active TrPs are spontaneously painful\, while latent TrPs are only painf
ul when stimulated. TrPs are physiological contractures\, characterized by
local ischemia and hypoxia\, local and referred pain and altered muscle a
ctivation patterns. TrPs activate muscle nociceptors and are peripheral so
urces of persistent nociceptive input\, thus contributing to the developme
nt of peripheral and central sensitization.\n\nDN can be divided into deep
and superficial DN. Deep DN has been shown to inactivate TrPs by elicitin
g local twitch responses (LTR) which are modulated by the central nervous
system. A LTR is a spinal cord reflex that is characterized by an involunt
ary contraction of the contractured taut band\, which can be elicited by a
snapping palpation or penetration with a needle. The LTR has been shown t
o be associated with alleviation and mitigation of spontaneous electrical
activity or motor endplate noise\; a reduction of the concentration of num
erous nociceptive\, inflammatory\, and immune system related chemicals and
relaxation of the taut band.\n\nDeep DN of TrPs is associated with reduce
d local and referred pain\, improved range of motion and decreased TrP irr
itability both locally and more remotely. DN normalizes the chemical milie
u and pH of skeletal muscle and restores local circulation. Superficial DN
is thought to activate mechanoreceptors coupled to slow conducting unmyel
inated C fibre afferents\, and indirectly\, stimulate the anterior cingula
r cortex. Superficial DN may also be mediated through stimulation of A del
ta fibres\, or via stretching of fibroblasts in connective tissue. Superfi
cial DN is associated with reduced local and referred pain and improved ra
nge of motion.\n\nDN may be incorporated into a treatment plan when myofas
cial TrPs are present\, which may lead to impairments in posture\, pain an
d functional limitations. TrPs are sources of persistent peripheral nocice
ptive input and their inactivation is consistent with current pain managem
ent insights DN also is indicated with restrictions in range of motion due
to contractured muscle fibres or taut bands\, or other soft tissue restri
ctions\, such as fascial adhesions or scar tissue. TrPs have been identifi
ed in numerous diagnoses and can treat radiculopathies\, joint dysfunction
 \, disk pathology\, tendinopathies\, cranio-mandibular dysfunction\, heada
 ches and migraines\, tension-type headaches\, carpal tunnel syndrome\, com
puter-related or repetitive strain disorders\, whiplash associated injury\
 , spinal dysfunction\, pelvic pain\, post-herpetic neuralgia\, complex reg
ional pain syndromes\, sports injuries\, nocturnal cramps and other relati
vely uncommon disorders.\n\nIf you are a soft tissue therapist and DN is i
n your scope of practice\, then is it time for you to learn this amazing n
ew technique to help your patients and clients overcome their pain and dys
function.\n\nFor more information about Dry Needling\, click here.\nA Club

 esiologists\, doctors\, nurses\, medical specialists and acupuncturists) f
or whom dry needling is within your scope of practice and you are legally
permitted to needle in your registered country / state. No minimum dry nee
dling or previous acupuncture experience required but presumed anatomy\, a
dvanced palpation skills and clinical expertise is expected due to the adv
anced nature and in depth structure of our DN courses. Professional indemn
ity insurance as per your professional body is also a pre-requisite.\nSome
sports / rehab / massage therapists can apply subject to scope of practic
e with your professional organization\, theoretical and practical experien
ce and having professional indemnity insurance.\nIf you are not sure wheth
er DN falls within your scope of practice\, ask your professional organiza
tion or you can email us here. \n[/spoiler]\n\n[spoiler title='How to boo
