The course will now run from 8 to lat e on friday and 8am to 3pm on saturday.\nCourse times\; Registration 7.45a m and the course runs from 8am to late on friday and 8am - 3pm on saturday .\nThis Dry Needling Level 1 course will be accredited in South Africa wit h approx 21 ceu's - 6 optional free homestudy ethics ceu's also available. \n\n[/spoiler]\n\n[spoiler title='More Info']\nWhy Dry Needling?\nDry Need ling (DN) is a skilled intervention that uses a thin filiform needle to pe netrate the skin and stimulate underlying myofascial trigger points\, musc ular\, and connective tissues for the management of neuromusculoskeletal p ain and movement impairments.\nDN is used to treat dysfunctions in skeleta l muscle\, fascia and connective tissue and diminish persistent peripheral nociceptive input and reduce or restore impairments of function leading t o improved activity and participation. The physiological basis for DN depe nds upon the targeted tissue and treatment objectives. The treatment of my ofascial trigger points ( TrPs) has a different physiological basis than t reatment of excessive muscle tension\, scar tissue\, fascia\, and connecti ve tissues. TrPs are hyperirritable spots within a taut band of contractur ed skeletal muscle fibres that produce local and/or referred pain when sti mulated.\n\nTrPs are divided into active and latent TrPs dependent upon th e degree of irritability. Active TrPs are spontaneously painful\, while la tent TrPs are only painful when stimulated. TrPs are physiological contrac tures\, characterized by local ischemia and hypoxia\, local and referred p ain and altered muscle activation patterns. TrPs activate muscle nocicepto rs and are peripheral sources of persistent nociceptive input\, thus contr ibuting to the development of peripheral and central sensitization.\n\nDN can be divided into deep and superficial DN. Deep DN has been shown to ina ctivate TrPs by eliciting local twitch responses (LTR) which are modulated by the central nervous system. A LTR is a spinal cord reflex that is char acterized by an involuntary contraction of the contractured taut band\, wh ich can be elicited by a snapping palpation or penetration with a needle. The LTR has been shown to be associated with alleviation and mitigation of spontaneous electrical activity or motor endplate noise\; a reduction of the concentration of numerous nociceptive\, inflammatory\, and immune syst em related chemicals and relaxation of the taut band.\n\nDeep DN of TrPs i s associated with reduced local and referred pain\, improved range of moti on and decreased TrP irritability both locally and more remotely. DN norma lizes the chemical milieu and pH of skeletal muscle and restores local cir culation. Superficial DN is thought to activate mechanoreceptors coupled t o slow conducting unmyelinated C fibre afferents\, and indirectly\, stimul ate the anterior cingular cortex. Superficial DN may also be mediated thro ugh stimulation of A delta fibres\, or via stretching of fibroblasts in co nnective tissue. Superficial DN is associated with reduced local and refer red pain and improved range of motion.\n\nDN may be incorporated into a tr eatment plan when myofascial TrPs are present\, which may lead to impairme nts in posture\, pain and functional limitations. TrPs are sources of pers istent peripheral nociceptive input and their inactivation is consistent w ith current pain management insights DN also is indicated with restriction s in range of motion due to contractured muscle fibres or taut bands\, or other soft tissue restrictions\, such as fascial adhesions or scar tissue.
