DESCRIPTION:
\nDRY N
EEDLING COURSE\; LEVEL 1\; Lady Bay Sports Club\, Trent Bridge\, Nottin
gham\, England\; 14-16 Nov 2016\nPlease note the change in start time on
the first day from 8.30am - Course times now: 10:30 to 5:30 on day 1 and 8
.30am - 4.30pm on days 2&amp\;3 all days\n Course registration on day 1 i
s 10am.\n
\n\n
\nWhy Dry Needling?\nDry
Needling (DN) is a skilled intervention that uses a thin filiform needle
to penetrate the skin and stimulate underlying myofascial trigger points\,
muscular\, and connective tissues for the management of neuromusculoskele
tal pain and movement impairments.\nDN is used to treat dysfunctions in sk
eletal muscle\, fascia and connective tissue and diminish persistent perip
heral nociceptive input and reduce or restore impairments of function lead
ing to improved activity and participation. The physiological basis for DN
depends upon the targeted tissue and treatment objectives. The treatment
of myofascial trigger points ( TrPs) has a different physiological basis t
han treatment of excessive muscle tension\, scar tissue\, fascia\, and con
nective tissues. TrPs are hyperirritable spots within a taut band of contr
actured skeletal muscle fibres that produce local and/or referred pain whe
n stimulated.\n\nTrPs are divided into active and latent TrPs dependent up
on the degree of irritability. Active TrPs are spontaneously painful\, whi
le latent TrPs are only painful when stimulated. TrPs are physiological co
ntractures\, characterized by local ischemia and hypoxia\, local and refer
red pain and altered muscle activation patterns. TrPs activate muscle noci
ceptors and are peripheral sources of persistent nociceptive input\, thus
contributing to the development of peripheral and central sensitization.\n
\nDN can be divided into deep and superficial DN. Deep DN has been shown t
o inactivate TrPs by eliciting local twitch responses (LTR) which are modu
lated by the central nervous system. A LTR is a spinal cord reflex that is
characterized by an involuntary contraction of the contractured taut band
\, which can be elicited by a snapping palpation or penetration with a nee
dle. The LTR has been shown to be associated with alleviation and mitigati
on of spontaneous electrical activity or motor endplate noise\; a reductio
n of the concentration of numerous nociceptive\, inflammatory\, and immune
system related chemicals and relaxation of the taut band.\n\nDeep DN of T
rPs is associated with reduced local and referred pain\, improved range of
motion and decreased TrP irritability both locally and more remotely. DN
normalizes the chemical milieu and pH of skeletal muscle and restores loca
l circulation. Superficial DN is thought to activate mechanoreceptors coup
led to slow conducting unmyelinated C fibre afferents\, and indirectly\, s
timulate the anterior cingular cortex. Superficial DN may also be mediated
through stimulation of A delta fibres\, or via stretching of fibroblasts
in connective tissue. Superficial DN is associated with reduced local and
referred pain and improved range of motion.\n\nDN may be incorporated into
a treatment plan when myofascial TrPs are present\, which may lead to imp
airments in posture\, pain and functional limitations. TrPs are sources of
persistent peripheral nociceptive input and their inactivation is consist
ent with current pain management insights DN also is indicated with restri
ctions in range of motion due to contractured muscle fibres or taut bands\
, or other soft tissue restrictions\, such as fascial adhesions or scar ti
ssue. TrPs have been identified in numerous diagnoses and can treat radicu
lopathies\, joint dysfunction\, disk pathology\, tendinopathies\, cranio-m
andibular dysfunction\, headaches and migraines\, tension-type headaches\,
carpal tunnel syndrome\, computer-related or repetitive strain disorders\
, whiplash associated injury\, spinal dysfunction\, pelvic pain\, post-her
petic neuralgia\, complex regional pain syndromes\, sports injuries\, noct
urnal cramps and other relatively uncommon disorders.\n\nIf you are a soft
tissue therapist and DN is in your scope of practice\, then is it time fo
r you to learn this amazing new technique to help your patients and client
s overcome their pain and dysfunction.\n\nFor more information about Dry N

or healthcare therapists / professionals (clinical physiotherapists (PT's)
\, chiropractors (DC's)\, osteopaths (DO's)\, podiatrists\, soft tissue an
d manual therapists\, kinesiologists\, doctors\, nurses\, medical speciali
sts and acupuncturists) for whom dry needling is within your scope of prac
tice and you are legally permitted to needle in your registered country /
state. No minimum dry needling or previous acupuncture experience required
but presumed anatomy\, advanced palpation skills and clinical expertise i
s expected due to the advanced nature and in depth structure of our DN cou
rses. Professional indemnity insurance as per your professional body is al
so a pre-requisite.\nSome sports / rehab / massage therapists can apply su
bject to scope of practice with your professional organization\, theoretic
al and practical experience and having professional indemnity insurance.\n
If you are not sure whether DN falls within your scope of practice\, ask y
our professional organization or you can email us here. \n
\n\n[
