SUMMARY:DRY NEEDLING COURSE LEVEL 1 with Craig Smith\; Cape Town
DESCRIPTION:
\nDRY NEEDLING COURSE\;
  LEVEL 1\; Cape Town\; 15-17 Sep 2023.\nCourse times\; day 1: 8.30am - 5p
m - registration on day 1 at 8am\, day 2\; 8am to 12pm. day 3: 8am-3/4pm.\
nThis Dry Needling Level 1 course is accredited in South Africa with 24 ce
u's.\n
\n\n
\nWhy Dry Needling?\nDry Ne
edling (DN) is a skilled intervention that uses a thin filiform needle to
penetrate the skin and stimulate underlying myofascial trigger points\, mu
scular\, and connective tissues for the management of neuromusculoskeletal
pain and movement impairments.\nDN is used to treat dysfunctions in skele
tal muscle\, fascia and connective tissue and diminish persistent peripher
al nociceptive input and reduce or restore impairments of function leading
to improved activity and participation. The physiological basis for DN de
pends upon the targeted tissue and treatment objectives. The treatment of
myofascial trigger points ( TrPs) has a different physiological basis than
treatment of excessive muscle tension\, scar tissue\, fascia\, and connec
tive tissues. TrPs are hyperirritable spots within a taut band of contract
ured skeletal muscle fibres that produce local and/or referred pain when s
timulated.\n\nTrPs are divided into active and latent TrPs dependent upon
the degree of irritability. Active TrPs are spontaneously painful\, while
latent TrPs are only painful when stimulated. TrPs are physiological contr
actures\, characterized by local ischemia and hypoxia\, local and referred
pain and altered muscle activation patterns. TrPs activate muscle nocicep
tors and are peripheral sources of persistent nociceptive input\, thus con
tributing to the development of peripheral and central sensitization.\n\nD
N can be divided into deep and superficial DN. Deep DN has been shown to i
nactivate TrPs by eliciting local twitch responses (LTR) which are modulat
ed by the central nervous system. A LTR is a spinal cord reflex that is ch
aracterized by an involuntary contraction of the contractured taut band\,
which can be elicited by a snapping palpation or penetration with a needle
. The LTR has been shown to be associated with alleviation and mitigation
of spontaneous electrical activity or motor endplate noise\; a reduction o
f the concentration of numerous nociceqtive\, inflammatory\, and immune sy
stem related chemicals and relaxation of the taut band.\n\nDeep DN of TrPs
is associated with reduced local and referred pain\, improved range of mo
tion and decreased TrP irritability both locally and more remotely. DN nor
malizes the chemical milieu and pH of skeletal muscle and restores local c
irculation. Superficial DN is thought to activate mechanoreceptors coupled
to slow conducting unmyelinated C fibre afferents\, and indirectly\, stim
ulate the anterior cingular cortex. Superficial DN may also be mediated th
rough stimulation of A delta fibres\, or via stretching of fibroblasts in
connective tissue. Superficial DN is associated with reduced local and ref
erred pain and improved range of motion.\n\nDN may be incorporated into a
treatment plan when myofascial TrPs are present\, which may lead to impair
ments in posture\, pain and functional limitations. TrPs are sources of pe
rsistent peripheral nociceptive input and their inactivation is consistent
with current pain management insights DN also is indicated with restricti
ons in range of motion due to contractured muscle fibres or taut bands\, o
r other soft tissue restrictions\, such as fascial adhesions or scar tissu
e. TrPs have been identified in numerous diagnoses and can treat radiculop
athies\, joint dysfunction\, disk pathology\, tendinopathies\, cranio-mand
ibular dysfunction\, headaches and migraines\, tension-type headaches\, ca
rpal tunnel syndrome\, computer-related or repetitive strain disorders\, w
hiplash associated injury\, spinal dysfunction\, pelvic pain\, post-herpet
ic neuralgia\, complex regional pain syndromes\, sports injuries\, nocturn
al cramps and other relatively uncommon disorders.\n\nIf you are a soft ti
ssue therapist and DN is in your scope of practice\, then is it time for y
ou to learn this amazing new technique to help your patients and clients o
vercome their pain and dysfunction.\n\nFor more information about Dry Need
ling\, click here.\n\nA Club Physio Dry Needling Course registration inclu
des:\n\n All practice needles supplied for the course\;\n An illustrated
electronic course manual (sent our weeks ahead of the course to help you
best prepare)\;\n Tea\, coffee and snacks on each day\;\n Certificate of
attendance in printed or digital form (with CPD points depending on your
areas approval / accreditation)\;\n Pathway to completing the Dry Needlin
g Level 2 course and certifying as a dry needling practitioner\;\n One fr

courses are for healthcare therapists / professionals (clinical physiother
apists (PT's)\, chiropractors (DC's)\, osteopaths (DO's)\, podiatrists\, s
oft tissue and manual therapists\, kinesiologists\, doctors\, nurses\, med
ical specialists and acupuncturists) for whom dry needling is within your
scope of practice and you are legally permitted to needle in your register
ed country / state. No minimum dry needling or previous acupuncture experi
ence required but presumed anatomy\, advanced palpation skills and clinica
l expertise is expected due to the advanced nature and in-depth structure
of our DN courses. Professional indemnity insurance as per your profession
al body is also a pre-requisite.\nSome sports / rehab / massage therapists
can apply subject to scope of practice with your professional organizatio
n\, theoretical and practical experience and having professional indemnity
insurance.\nIf you are not sure whether DN falls within your scope of pra
ctice\, ask your professional organization or you can email us here - info
