PROPRIOCEPTIVE NEUROMUSCULO FACILITATION (PNF) OF THE NECK AND SCAPULA IN STROKE PATIENT- with Srishti Banerjee.

Course Objectives:

This course aims to equip healthcare professionals with the knowledge and skills to utilize PNF techniques for improving neck and scapular control in stroke patients. By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
• Learning Objective 1: Explain the principles and benefits of PNF for improving neck and scapular control in stroke rehabilitation.
• Learning Objective 2: Identify common impairments of the neck and scapula after stroke and their impact on daily activities.
• Learning Objective 3: Demonstrate proper techniques for PNF patterns targeting neck flexion, extension, rotation, and lateral flexion.
• Learning Objective 4: Demonstrate proper techniques for PNF patterns targeting scapular upward rotation, downward rotation, protraction, and retraction.
• Learning Objective 5: Develop individualized treatment plans incorporating PNF techniques for patients with specific neck and scapular impairments following stroke.
Target Audience: Physical therapists, occupational therapists, rehabilitation nurses, and other healthcare professionals working with stroke patients.
Course Duration: 3 hours (broken down into six 30-minute modules)

Course Format:
• Interactive lectures with video demonstrations tailored to learning objectives
• Case studies and problem-solving exercises designed to apply knowledge to real-world scenarios
• Q&A sessions throughout the course to address individual understanding
Course Schedule:
Module 1 (30 Minutes): Introduction & Foundation
• Define PNF and explain its key principles (facilitation techniques, proprioception, irradiation) (addresses LO1)
• Discuss the neurological effects of stroke on neck and scapular control (addresses LO2)
• Review the benefits of PNF for improving function and reducing impairments in stroke rehabilitation (addresses LO1)
Module 2 (30 Minutes): Anatomy & Biomechanics
• Review the anatomy of the neck and scapula (muscles, joints, movements) (foundational knowledge for LO3 & LO4)
• Identify common impairments of neck and scapula after stroke (spasticity, weakness, pain) (addresses LO2)
• Explain how impaired neck and scapular control affects daily activities (addresses LO2)
Module 3 (30 Minutes): PNF Techniques for Neck
• Introduce PNF patterns for neck flexion, extension, rotation, and lateral flexion (addresses LO3)
• Demonstrate hold-relax and contract-relax techniques for neck muscles with clear video examples (addresses LO3)
• Discuss considerations for patient positioning, therapist assistance, and safety during PNF application (addresses LO3)
Module 4 (30 Minutes): PNF Techniques for Scapula
• Introduce PNF patterns for scapular upward rotation, downward rotation, protraction, and retraction (addresses LO4)
• Demonstrate hold-relax and contract-relax techniques for scapular muscles with video demonstrations (addresses LO4)
• Address specific scapular dysfunction patterns (winging scapula, scapulothoracic joint dysfunction) (addresses LO4)
Module 5 (30 Minutes): Case Studies & Problem Solving
• Present interactive case studies of stroke patients with varying neck and scapular impairments (addresses LO5)
• Participants apply learned PNF techniques to develop individualized treatment plans for the cases (addresses LO5)
• Facilitate group discussion and Q&A to address challenges and refine treatment strategies (addresses LO5)
Module 6 (30 Minutes): Course Wrap-Up
• Review key learning points and course objectives, ensuring all objectives have been covered (addresses all LO)
