zoom meeting\;\nOutline\n\nDo you treat swimmers and wonder where to start
\, or how to identify quickly and effectively what is the source of the in
jury? Do you find that many of your swimmers’ battle with recurrent nigg
les? When faced with an injured swimmer in clinic\, we need to efficiently
identify the cause of the injury and also address the symptoms without wa
tching them in the water. That’s why I devised a land-based approach to
screening my swimmers – it guides my diagnostic process as well as highl
ighting the rehab and treatment that is needed.\n\nWhy is swimming a uniqu
e sport?\nFor a start there are no ground reaction forces but instead the
resistance of the water to propel through. Hence the body works in an enti
rely different way to many other sports.\n\nFrom a young age\, swimmers co
mmit to a high volume of training. This on its own carries a risk.\n\nFina
lly the nature of this sport involves taking thousands of repetitive strok
es each session. The cumulative effect of this means swimmers are prone to
pain due to micro-trauma (small repetitive trauma). This can be accelerat
ed by hyper or hypo-mobility (swimmers tend to be hyper-mobile)\, poor cor
e or scapula control or inadequate technique.\n\nSwimming injuries\nThe mo
st common issue reported by swimmers is not surprisingly shoulder pain\, f
ollowed by knee and lower back pain.\n\nMost of the shoulder and knee rela
ted injuries are sustained in the water.\n\nSwimmers are encouraged to do
strength work to prevent injuries and help them get faster\, yet land-base
d training is responsible for many injuries\, including the majority of ba
ck pain.\n\nHow does screening help?\nBy screening the athlete for flexibi
lity\, strength and control issues that most commonly result in swimming i
njuries\, we can highlight areas of concern to prevent injuries before the
y happen or identify why a swimmers struggles with recurrent injuries.\n\n
The screening is used to devise a land-based program specifically for each
swimmer and will reduce ongoing niggles or recurrent pain.\n\nProbably th
e most beneficial effect of the program in the eyes of the patiwnt will be
to improve those all important swim splits by facilitating better techniq
ue and promoting consistent training through lack of missed sessions from
injury.\n\nThis 3 hour crash course in treating swimmers will cover:\n\n1)
Swim biomechanics with real time video analysis to provide a true appreci
ation of this demanding sport.\n\n2) A quick but comprehensive screening t
ool to use with your swimmers and triathletes.\n\n3) The strength exercise
s you can prescribe based on the results of the screening tool.\n\n4) We w
ill discuss the manual treatment interventions I have found most effective
. Please note this is not a comprehensive course on shoulder treatment or
techniques – that would take much more time – but this will provide a
very useful tool for managing your swimmers and triathletes in clinic.\n\n
