The Active Pelvis : Course Outline 2016

The pelvis is a complex and sometimes confusing area in which to work. Multiple clinicians treat different presentations with varying results.

In the Active Pelvis course, we will explore the biomechanical challenges born by the pelvis, and marry it with pelvic pathophysiology to provide of framework for dealing with pelvic function across disparate populations.

Aims:

1. To integrate the many clinical approaches in the pelvis

2. To enhance insight into the scope of pelvic function

3. To explore the role of activity and weight bearing on the pelvis

4. To provide a framework for assessment, treatment and referral of pelvic patient populations

Learning outcomes:

1. Perform a comprehensive assessment of the pelvis (excluding internal examination)

2. Demonstrate easy techniques to assess pelvic function

3. Problem solve and integrate between MSK and WH pelvic presentations

4. Reflect on the contribution of different systems in clinical cases

Day 1 Background and Assessment

You will be introduced to the necessary anatomy and biomechanics of the pelvis, which will be further discussed in terms of pelvic function and pathophysiology.

The different physio assessment approaches – musculolskeletal (MSK) vs. Women’s Health (WH) will be compared, examining what information becomes available to whom. You will consider assessment in terms of goals, expectations and outcomes. Both the MSK and WH pelvic testing will be demonstrated.

Day 2 Presentation and Treatment

The focus will be on clinical aspects of presentation including the impact of sport on the pelvis (e.g. hernias and hemorrhoids, adductor strain, cyclists’ syndrome), and pelvic dysfunction on sporting performance (e.g. stress incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse).

The body is not simply a sum of its pieces, so the relevance of issues ‘above and below’ will be explored. The role of the pelvic floor muscles during respiration will be discovered in practical time, as will the stress response.

We shall cover treatment in the pelvis, for populations ranging from dysfunctional to elite athletes. The secret behind ‘core activation’ will become evident in practical time.

Imaging will provide a diagnostic standard against which populations can be compared to cement concepts of pelvic function.

We shall conclude by assessing a live model (excluding internal).
