Medical professionals registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (“HPCSA”) is given a professional status and is afforded the right to practise that profession in South Africa.
A professional registered with the HPCSA is recognized as competent practitioner who may accordingly charge fees for professional services rendered. There are mechanisms in place to ensure that registered professionals continue to render professional and competent service and that professionals undergo continuous professional development courses to maintain established disciplinary processes.
In order to ensure that professionals are aware what is required from them in respect of ethical and professional practise the HPCSA has published general ethical rules that apply to all professionals and additional ethical rules that apply to certain professions only.
