MORE INFO
David Lintonbon Rgd Osteopath and lecturer from the British College of Osteopathic Medicine will safely teach you accurate and skillful palpation skills that precede effective treatment techniques for the Abdominal Viscera.
Visceral osteopathy uses the same principle as osteopathy – working on the body as a whole, treating the person not the diagnosis and encouraging the bodies innate ability to heal itself.
It is a gentle hands on technique applied to the abdomen to optimise blood and lymph supply to the internal organs. The internal organs are known as the viscera and include the liver, kidneys, stomach and bowel. These organs are surrounded by fascia (a connective tissue), much like the different layers of fascia that surrounds bones and muscles – in fact the very same continuous web of fascia that continues from the fascia covering your brain and spinal cord to the plantar fascia of the foot.
The viscera are supported by ligaments that are suspended from the spinal column and are enclosed by muscle such as the diaphragm, pelvic floor and abdominals.
The viscera should naturally move in response to daily movement – breathing and peristalsis. Disruptions in the way you move, breathe or any tension in the musculoskeletal system and fascia can affect blood flow to, and lymph drainage from the internal organs potentially causing pain and dysfunction.
Visceral osteopathy addresses the movement and balance of the internal organs and how they relate to the muscles, ligaments, tendons and joints in your body.
Consider the following example: The stomach and liver are connected via ligaments to the diaphragm. If the diaphragm is not moving correctly or there is a build-up of tension (this is very common post partum), the viscera could be affected leading to indigestion, digestive problems or back pain. This is just one of many ways how the internal organs can affect your musculoskeletal system.
The intro course to the Abdominal Viscera Manipulation topics include;
• Palpating the layers of the belly from skin to spine;
• Applications to indigestion, acid reflux, and GERD;
• Application to period pain;
• Applications to low back pain;
• Applications to abdominal surgeries and scar tissue.
You will be awarded a Certificate of attendance at the end of the course.
