A good awareness of the ethical consideration relating to all healthcare practitioners and therapists is essential to all professionals.
Medical professionals registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (“HPCSA”) is given a professional status and is afforded the right to practise that profession in South Africa.
A professional registered with the HPCSA is recognized as competent practitioner who may accordingly charge fees for professional services rendered. There are mechanisms in place to ensure that registered professionals continue to render professional and competent service and that professionals undergo continuous professional development courses to maintain established disciplinary processes.
In order to ensure that professionals are aware what is required from them in respect of ethical and professional practise the HPCSA has published general ethical rules that apply to all professionals and additional ethical rules that apply to certain professions only. Furthermore, in an attempt to guide the professions, the HPCSA has also published various Guidelines to professionals dealing amongst other things with topics like informed consent, confidentiality and keeping of patient records.
The online home study course is presented by an admitted attorney with right of appearance in the High Court of South Africa. It explains the concepts ethical practice, complaints procedures and how to respond, dual responsibilities, accurate record keeping, professional conduct relating to Health Care in general and also some specific rules relating to physios.
